Our beautiful daughter Violet Patsy Bray was born July 31, 2016 at 29 weeks gestation weighing just under two pounds. After 48 days in the NICU at Sharp Mary Birch in San Diego, we were finally able to bring her home. We received troublesome news around 12 weeks that put me into a high-risk pregnancy. I had a very rare condition called confined placental mosaicism which means my placenta had an extra chromosome 16 (Trisomy 16) and Violet did not. Thankfully, her chromosomes are normal. Almost all pregnancies miscarry when Trisomy 16 is present. But sometimes nature steps in and corrects the chromosomal issue in the baby's cells leaving the extra chromosome confined to the placental cells (trisomic rescue). These confined placental mosaicism pregnancies often result in premature babies as the placenta is usually unable to support the baby's growth in utero due to the Trisomy 16. So we knew having a preemie was a strong possibility. And, sure enough a routine ultrasound at 29 weeks showed Violet wasn't getting what she needed from my placenta. Two days later she was born. She weighed only 900 grams when she was born, which put her in the 5th percentile compared to other 29 weekers. She was more the size of 25 or 26 weeker.
Violet was a rock star from the beginning of her stay in the NICU through yesterday when she was finally discharged. She needed minimal breathing assistance early on and gained weight steadily the entire time--never losing weight. When we finally took her home she weighed 4lbs 4oz. The NICU stay was no doubt a grind, but we stayed focused on our little miracle who was consistently thriving and doing well. While two emergency surgeries derailed our spirits a bit while we were in the midst of our NICU stay (me with gall bladder removal three weeks after Violet was born and Travis, Violet's dad, with a completely torn Achilles which was surgically repaired last week) we still consider ourselves lucky that Violet beat the odds from the very beginning and is home with us now. She is a fighter and our little miracle!
Violet is now 8 months old (5.5 months adjusted) and weighs about 13 1/2 pounds. She is thriving and, for a 29 weeker, is shattering goals and expectations! She can already sit up on her own unassisted and is starting to roll over on her own and eat baby food. She is highly engaging, has a great smile and is obsessed with her big sister Emma. She truly is our little miracle who beat all statistical odds from inception!
